Lessons from Cal

There are some good things about being a pet owner before you become a parent. Here are the things I learned from our cat Cal about being a dad:

- Unless you want her screaming at you, you must feed her when she's hungry.
- When she wants to go out to play, you should let her, even though your instinct is to keep her near and protect her.
- She's going to have boundaries: If you shower too much love on her, she might not like it.
- Spending time just hanging out with her makes me happy.
- Cleaning up poop is no fun, but not cleaning it up is worse.
- When she wants to come inside and spend time with you, you need to let her in, even if you don't feel like it.
- She's gonna spew sometimes, but then she'll feel better.
- Purring/laughing is one of the sweetest sounds there is.
- I should let her curl up on my lap whenever she wants to - life is short.
